On the night of 24/25th February, 1916, 8th Royal West Surrey (Queens) of 72Brigade, 24th Division moved into the front line trenches at Hooge in the Ypres salient. There they remained for 5 days during which time two men, were killed, on of whom was Albert Gaywood. The Battalion Diary makes no mention of casualties but records that the enemy artillery was active and it is likely that he was killed by shell fire.
